Audubon Birds

Nicole Duvalier, the sister of then Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, commissioned the printing of stamps with images of birds by Haitian-born naturalist J.J. Audubon in 1975. The commissioning and printing of the stamps in the USSR was illegal and given a legal veneer by bribing the director of the Haitian State Press Agency, through whom a related article with a forged signature announced the stamps.

When the stamps reached the philatelic market and were in demand, large quantities were available. Each of the 15 stamp designs was available in 4 denominations, resulting in a total of 60 individual stamps. The stamp issue coincided with Audubon's 190th birthday. Audubon provided important biological insights in the 19th century, including his book, “The Birds of America”, in which he published detailed drawings of birds. He would certainly have been anything but pleased about the misuse of his drawings on illegal stamps. But there are also legal stamps from other postal administrations with Audubon birds.
