West Indies Cricket

On June 6, 1988, Barbados issued a set of stamps on the theme “West Indies Cricket”. Each of the five stamps featured the likeness of a deserving player who had played for the West Indies side. The 50 cent stamp featured Herman C. Griffith (1893-1980). Griffith was a participant in the first West Indian Test Series in 1928 against England, in which Griffith was the leading bowler. The name on the stamp was correct, but it depicted Edward L. (Barto) Bartlett (1906-1976). He was also a participant in the first Test series on the West Indies side.

The error was noticed in good time before issue and the stamp was not issued, but 101 copies had already been sold at the Bridgetown post office. A corrected stamp with Griffith's likeness was issued on July 11, 1988.
