Raj Kumar Shukla Mahatma Gandhi Champaran indigo satyagraha

On October 16, 2000, a stamp was issued in India to commemorate the 125th birthday of Raj Kumar Shukla (1875-1929). Shukla met Mahatma Gandhi in 1916 to draw his attention to the poor living conditions of indigo farmers in the Champaran region of India. This led to the Champaran Satyagraha, the first Satyagraha (civil and non-violent resistance) led by Gandhi.

The stamp had a print run of 100.000. This was much lower than the other commemorative stamps during this period, which were around 3-4 million. The reason for the low print run is unknown.
