In 1968, 2 stamps were planned for issue to commemorate the 50^th anniversary of Ceylon's Buddhist Congress. The 50 Cent face value stamp featured a large Buddha foot, which resulted in objections to the stamp.

One day ahead of issue was the stamp withdrawn. The news did not reach some of the more rural post offices in time and they sold about 1600 copies of the stamp. The remainder of the issue was destroyed. The second stamp was not affected.
