Flash In The Pan

The German Reich post offices in Morocco used overprint stamps based on the Germania stamps with the inscription "REICHSPOST" until 1905. Therefore, the original stamps were used here 3 years longer than in the German Reich, where the inscription "DEUTSCHES REICH" was used from 1902 onwards. The overprints were "MAROCCO" and the respective face value of the stamp and "CENTAVOS". Both in antique script, but due to an additional “fat” overprinting 1903 in two versions.

Due to further dwindling stocks, the 5 Centavos stamp was reprinted, but in the Gothic script already planned for the next issue. The stamps were to be issued only when needed, 18.500 of the 22.000 stamps were sent to the post office in Tangier. In fact, the stamp was sold at the counter in Tangier for one day on September, 30, 1905 and was valid for postage until December, 31, 1905. 16.500 stamps were sold.

The very next day, the new Germania overprints with the inscription "DEUTSCHES REICH" and Gothic script were issued. The flash in the pan stamp was bought mostly by speculators, used covers hardly exist and cancelled stamps are mostly from the first day
