With the postage increase of August 1, 1916, a domestic postcard did cost 7 1/2 Pfennig instead of 5 Pfennig. Previously, two 5 Pfennig postcards could be drawn from postcard machines for 10 Pfennig. Since the machines could not be converted to the new postage, they were equipped with 7 1/2 Pfennig postcards and each of these postcards had an additional 2 1/2 Pfennig stamp affixed to it, which could be removed after the card purchase and used elsewhere. For this purpose, 2 1/2 Pfennig stamps were printed tête-bêche with a blank field on each side.
