December 7, 1835, marks the start of the German Railway. The first train traveled from Nuremberg to Fürth on this day. It was a steam train “Adler” with 35 km/h velocity. Celebrating 175 years return of this event, the German Post issued two “Plusbriefe”, each with its own cachet.
The cachets both bear the inscription “175 Jahre Deutsche Eisenbahn 1860-2010”, translating to “175 years of German Railway 1860-2010”. The period should of course have read 1835-2010. When the error was noticed, selling of the “Plusbriefe” was stopped. 1750 copies each were originally produced. How many were sold remains unknown.
