In August/September 2006, the UK Postal Services issued Machin stamps with large digits, namely “1” and “2” for 1st and 2nd class letters. They were issued both in adhesive if dampened and self-adhesive form. In parallel stamps were issued with the same illustration and coloring with the inscription “Large”.
These issues were released following a postage change for standard (23p/32p for 1st and 2nd class) and large (37p/44p for 1st and 2nd class) letters. The customers were confused however since often the stamps without the “Large” inscription were used for large letters. This was due to the large digits resembling each other on both types of stamps. Therefore the postal services withdrew the stamps for standard letters after one year while the “Large” stamps remained in service.
