In 2002, Laos issued two stamps commemorating the “Year of the Mountains”. Laos political status is that of a “People's Democratic Republic”, shortened “PDR”. Therefore the country name on the stamps is often given as “Lao PDR”. In this case however, the name was imprinted as “Lao PRD”. Once the mistake was detected were the stamps withdrawn from circulation. A replacement was issued with the correct naming “Lao PDR”.
