On September 19, 1960, Liechtenstein issued its first „Europe“ stamp. The design was rather modern, breaking with thus far more traditional designs of Liechtenstein stamps. The London printing office Harrisons & Sons produced 1.5 million copies of the stamp, but the Liechtenstein Post found only 322.000 of acceptable quality for issuing while the rest was destroyed. The alternative story goes simply that only 322.000 stamps were printed. In any case was the interest in the stamp such that the edition was sold out immediately. In order to have copies for its own archives, the Liechtenstein Post ordered a reprint in very small numbers.
