Ahead of the April 29, 2011, Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Niue issued a se-tenant with two stamps and a corresponding sheetlet on March 23, 2011. The stamps were “separated” through a perforation such that Kate and William would be each on one stamp. This “unfortunate” separation did stir comments such as “bad design” and “embarrassing”, culminating in the assumption that one could interpret this as a divorce to come for the couple. In addition were the face values of the stamps different, such that Kate was worth “less” than William. The then Prime Minister, Toke Talagi, felt obliged to comment the stamps. He said that the design of the stamps was “unusual” but the stamps would nonetheless celebrate the marriage. There were no consequences for the stamps.
