On May 27, 2009, a female Panda bear on loan from China gave birth to a cub. The birth was the first of its kind to have occurred in the country and triggered a nationwide frenzy. The government decided that the public should have the opportunity to name the cub. The Thai Postal Service then issued pre-addressed postcards with four name choices (Khwan Thai, Lin Ping, Tai Jeen, Ying Ying) that people could buy and tick off the name of their choice before posting it.
Thailand's government announced on August 8, 2009 that the panda cub will be named "Lin Ping". Almost 35% of all postcard senders had voted for that name. Remaining postcards were withdrawn from all post offices across the country.
